It's that time again.
Women get their finest out, men cry out in boredem and movie critics shake their head. Yep, Sex and the City 2 is now in cinemas and I knew I couldn't not see it, regardless of the quality.
So let me say now, despite knowing I couldn't go on if I didn't see it for myself, it was not worth the $15 movie ticket - or my self made hype (note: I had no idea movie tickets were this expensive! Last time I went it cost me $10!!)
I ask you know to leave this blog if you have not seen it and plan on doing so, but please, before I bid you farewell - Don't be put off by my negativity, we all know its the movie you have to see regardless.
Now, down to business.
Let's start with the low lights:
- Some pretty darn awful acting. During the wedding, I almost wanted to cry because it was all just so so bad! I will say that it got better on the part of Sam and Miranda later on, I loved those two in this film.
- Liza Minelli - Terrible lipsynching.
- NOT ENOUGH NEW YORK. I know, I know, it was supposed to be about their Middle East adventures but there was barely a glimpse of the wonderful city that has made the characters and Sex and the City brand what it is. Didn't they themselves say the city was like the 5th girl? It wasn't complete without it.
- Boring. Apart from the occasional giggle or completely predictable sub plots (Carrie and Aiden kiss anyone?), there was nothing to this film that made it what the entire show has been based upon. A short mention to her new book and a Vogue deadline doesn't cut it for me, sorry.
But enough negativity, lets find the bright side and look at the positives:
- The costumes. What never fails to inspire me about Carrie is her no-fear fashion approach. If only I was as confident as this fictional character to go to a market in the show stopping skirt she had on. I loved the maxi dresses, middle east inspired wear and Charlottes ball gowns at the wedding and when she gets drunk with Miranda.
- The apartment. No, not the overdone and overpriced Upper East Side new place for 'Mr and Mrs Preston' but Carries old place. It brings back the warmness seeing that again, oh how I wish I lived there. Expanding on this, the closets in both apartments melted me, oh me oh my.
- The Girls Friendships. Enough said. I loved the Karaoke scene they did!
- The Arab women taking of their burkas to show the new season clothes. I don't know enough about their culture to know if this would actually happen (ok so not to the same extent, but if they are interested like this in fashion) This scene was one of the most inspiring moments, not on the part of Carrie & Co.
- Miranda. And on that note, Samantha too. These girls had me in giggles throughout! They were the standouts in this film for me, some very funny lines.
All in all, I'll watch it again when it comes out on DVD. Heck I'll probably buy it the day it comes out. But I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as the TV series or even the first film.
All my love,
SiS x

Nice review - I really liked the second film though. But perhaps because I went in with reallllly low expectations :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Miranda, she is definitely one of the better actors and she's just so 'herself'!!

Yes, some Arab women (especially the younger ones) do wear all this stuff. Most of them are wearing exactly what we wear, only cov
ReplyDeleteered by their abayas (black robe). In the mall one of my favourite games is "Spot the designer heels". As their feet are one of the few things that show, it is ALL about the shoes, bags and earrings!!! The arm candy here is ridiculous. But yes, quite possible the girl you see passing you has a micro mini on underneath her abaya. If she is alone with only female company at home they can all wear just whatever clothes they want. (I live in Dubai)
